Single-Feed Vs. Multi-Feed Check Scanners

If you are new to the world of RDC (Remote Deposit Capture) or just in the market for a new check scanner, you will find yourself trying to decide between single-feed and multi-feed models. Both of these can be good options for different purposes. Let’s look at which will suit your needs best.

What’s the Difference?

Single-feed and multi-feed check scanners both do basically the same thing, they capture the images of your checks to be sent to your financial institution. But there are a few differences that can help determine which would be best for you.

Single-Feed

Single-feed scanners are meant for businesses receiving a lower amount of checks at a time. These scanners will require the operator to insert one check at a time, manually. These units are less expensive that multi-feed scanners and are overall easier to operate. Because of their lower cost, they can be a great option for companies who take in a small number of checks at a time.

Multi-Feed

If you receive a large quantity of checks, you will likely want to go with a multi-feed scanner. The multi-feed scanner will be a major time saver for you because it will allow you to place a specified number of check into the feed area and the scanner will automatically feed them through one at a time. There are various speeds available, but generally multi-feed scanners can scan 50+ checks per minute.

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER

When choosing your scanner, you will have a number of questions that you will need to ask yourself.

  1. Will this scanner work with my bank’s (or existing) software?
  2. Does my bank have a list of recommended scanners?
  3. How many checks will I be scanning at a time? Am I okay with scanning them one by one or does it make sense to upgrade to multi-feed to save time?
  4. Will I need to be endorsing or franking the checks?
  5. Do I need my scanner to be network-capable?

If you can answer these questions, you will be much better prepared to make the decision on which scanner will be best for your company. Our sales team is also prepared to help you run through these questions so that you can make an educated decision before purchasing.
